In piedi, dritto, quasi sull’attenti di fronte al suo popolo. Le parole semplici. La richiesta di preghiere e la recita insieme al popolo delle preghiere che tutti conoscono. Poi inchinato, che implora “per favore” la benedizione di tutti. Sempre, sul volto segnato dall’età, un’espressione e uno sguardo sereni, da
ragazzo che guarda in avanti con speranza, in pace con tutti e pronto a fare il suo dovere.
Il vescovo di Roma, la Chiesa che presiede nella carità tutte le Chiese, mi ha fatto sentire la gioia di essere nella comunione di una Chiesa che ha straordinarie riserve di innovazione e di giovinezza. Francesco è un giovane, perché la fede nutre la speranza e la carità, e mantiene per sempre giovani. Le sue prime parole oggi, alla sua prima uscita dal Vaticano, sono state di misericordia, perdono, speranza. Sono certo che darà a tutti uno slancio nuovo, aprirà nuove strade e nuovi orizzonti. Veramente
la fede giovane del Sud del mondo diventa, con Francesco, visibile capo della Chiesa di Roma.
Vogliono a tutti i costi trovargli difetti, silenzi colpevoli, alleanze sporche. Certamente non sarà perfetto, e avrà delle colpe anche se non gravi come quelle che vogliono attribuirgli. La grandezza di una persona non sta nell’essere perfetto, perché perfetto è solo il Padre che è nei cieli, sta piuttosto nella disponibilità a rinascere sempre, nello spirito, come Gesù spiega a Nicodemo.
Francesco è il tipo di papa che posso immaginare venga a Nairobi e si metta a parlare con le donne in fila per l’acqua alla fontana di Kivuli, o a camminare per le strade di Kibera ascoltando partecipe e divertito le storie dei bambini di strada.

The Bishop of Rome, the Church which presides in charity all the Churches, made me feel the joy of being in communion with a Church that has extraordinary reserves of innovation and youth. Francis is a young person, because faith nourishes hope and charity, and keeps forever young. His first words today, in his trips outside the Vatican, were of mercy, forgiveness and hope. I am sure that will give everyone a new impetus, will open up new avenues and new horizons. With Francis, indeed, the young faith of the South of the world enters the Church of Rome.
They want to find in him, at all costs, many failures: guilty silence, dirty alliances. Certainly he is not perfect, and has faults, though probably not as severe as those which they want to attibute to him. The greatness of a person is not in being perfect, because perfect is only the Father who is in heaven, the greatness is rather in the willingness to always be reborn in the spirit, as Jesus explained to Nicodemus.
Francis is the kind of pope I can imagine coming to Nairobi and going to talk to the women in line for the water from the fountain of Kivuli, or walking the streets of Kibera listening with participation and true concern to the stories of the street children.
Per me è un Papa molto evangelico! E’ come se Dio ce lo avesse annunciato all’ISSR di Parma. Sento che Dio lo ha mandato in un momento critico, per cambiare rotta a dei vertici non più in grado di capire l’urgenza di attuare il Concilio Vaticano II. Benvenuti Tempi Nuovi!
